If you’re buying a CCTV system, it’s easy to assume 4K security cameras are automatically better than 2K cameras.
On paper, 4K provides more resolution.
But resolution isn’t the only thing that determines whether CCTV footage is useful.
Where 4K Can Help
Higher resolution can provide additional image detail, particularly when you’re trying to identify something further into the scene.
That can be useful for larger areas such as:
- Driveways
- Car parks
- Commercial sites
- Larger entrances
However, higher-resolution footage can also require more storage and network bandwidth.
Don’t Ignore Low-Light Performance
Security cameras spend a lot of their lives operating in difficult lighting.
A camera with excellent specifications during daylight may produce very different results at night.
Sensor quality, lens selection, available lighting and camera positioning all contribute to the final image.
Positioning Still Matters More
A 4K camera pointing at the wrong area is still pointing at the wrong area.
We’d rather install the right camera in the right position than select equipment purely because the resolution number looks impressive.
