Wi-Fi Dead Zones

Wi-Fi Dead Zones at Home? Don’t Automatically Buy an Extender

You’ve got fast NBN. The router works perfectly in the living room.

Then you walk upstairs and suddenly Netflix buffers, video calls drop out and your phone switches back to mobile data.

It’s a common problem in Melbourne homes.

And another Wi-Fi extender isn’t always the best solution.

Why Does Wi-Fi Become Weak?

Wi-Fi performance can be affected by:

  • Distance from the router
  • Multiple storeys
  • Brick and concrete walls
  • Metal structures
  • Router placement
  • Interference from neighbouring networks

Putting the fastest internet connection available into your house doesn’t solve these physical limitations.

Extender vs Mesh vs Access Point

A Wi-Fi extender receives an existing wireless signal and repeats it.

That can work in some situations, but if the signal reaching the extender is already poor, there isn’t much good signal available to repeat.

Mesh Wi-Fi can provide better coverage and is convenient for many homes.

For larger properties, another option is installing wired Wi-Fi access points connected back to the network using Ethernet.

This allows access points to be positioned where coverage is actually needed.

The Router Doesn’t Have to Do Everything

One mistake we see is expecting a single router installed at one end of the house to provide perfect coverage everywhere.

A better network can use multiple properly positioned access points to provide coverage across the property.

Systems such as UniFi can also bring the network and wireless access points together under one management platform.

Need Better Wi-Fi in Melbourne?

Aussie Vision provides Wi-Fi installation and home network solutions across Melbourne.

Rather than automatically adding another extender, we can look at the property, existing network and where coverage is actually needed.

Sometimes the answer isn’t faster internet.

It’s a better network.
